When most people think of technology education, they picture ready-to-use software, advanced laboratories, and students navigating smoothly behind computers. However, out in the real field, the story begins at a much simpler and far more exciting point.
When I first walked into the classroom at Karatay Municipality to teach Artificial Intelligence to 9th grade students aged 14 to 15, I realized that despite growing up right at the heart of the digital world, these young minds stumbled while typing the @ symbol on the keyboard and were just at the beginning of their journey when it came to basic computer literacy like file management or browser navigation.
On top of that, our technical infrastructure and resources were quite limited. There was no projector, meaning instead of explaining things on a board, I had to walk up to each student and mentor them individually at their screens. The computers ran DeepFreeze software that reset every session upon logging off. There were strict firewalls, registration hurdles requiring phone codes for students without personal mobile phones, and a tight schedule split into two 30-minute lessons per week across five different classes.
Yet, as a Product Designer, I knew that the best ideas are born where constraints are highest. We chose to treat this situation not as an obstacle, but as a framework for an engaging experience to unlock the potential in these students.
We broke that initial hesitation by starting our lessons with fun, practical technologies that ran straight from the browser without needing logins or credentials. Through Google's AI for Oceans on Code.org, they experienced how data labeling and machine learning work. They decoded algorithms and logic through the iconic Dinosaur Game mechanics on screen. Using tools like Nano Banana and Gemini, they learned to visualize their dream characters through prompts. When they transformed those two-dimensional characters into 3D game objects with Tripo.ai and rotated them 360 degrees on their screens, the excitement in the room was truly priceless. They brought their visual characters to life with movement, camera angles, and animations using AI video tools like Higgsfield. At the peak of this process, without diving into complex code, they experienced building prototype web applications using Google AI Studio driven purely by natural language to solve real-world problems.
What we accomplished in just one hour a week split into two short sessions went far beyond teaching software or AI tools. We witnessed a true shift in their mindset. A student who was searching for a special character key just a few weeks prior turned into a designer and creator who models their own 3D game character, writes its lore, and builds a working web application backed by artificial intelligence.
For perhaps the first time in their lives, these students experienced a fundamental truth: technology is not just something to consume by playing games or watching videos; it is a playground they can shape and build from scratch using their own imagination.
Toward the end of the course, what filled me with the greatest pride was hearing the students express a desire to pursue game design in the future or share how building web applications was far more enjoyable than they had ever anticipated. Discovering their inner passion for game development, UI design, and web technologies at the very start of 9th grade became a pivotal milestone that might just shape their future career paths.
This experience proved once again that when approached with gamification, a well-structured curriculum, and an authentic mentoring tone, young people can move mountains regardless of the limitations. From a classroom with no projector and system-resetting software emerged a confident group of youth who know what they want, designing their own digital products and launching them with AI. Witnessing such immense progress in such a short time and making a small impact on their lives was an indescribable joy.
